Willie’s Superbrew is a seltzer with a cause. In an exclusive interview with Hard Seltzer News, Willie’s Superbrew co-founder, Nico Enriquez spoke about the company’s commitment to positive environmental change.
“We have five values — foster growth, no bullshit, have a soul, be curious and innovative and live responsibly,” Enriquez told Hard Seltzer News.
The company lives up to their values. In June of this year, Willie’s Superbrew coordinated a mass beach clean up across Cape Cod, covering 113 beaches and spanning 600 miles of coastline. An estimated 1,400 pounds of trash were collected from the beaches, and a total of 195 miles were ultimately cleaned.
Willie’s Superbrew began with a single recipe — a ginger and lemon brew — from the mind of Willie Fenichel. Enriquez, a surfer friend of Willie’s, pushed his co-founder to scale production and start selling. The two began to sell the brew at local farmers markets, and after a successful kickstarter campaign, Willie’s Superbrew delved into the hard seltzer market. Now an award winning brand with five core flavors (and some upcoming seasonals), the company prides itself on their use of real fruit ingredients and their cane sugar fermentation base.
“Willie is a true legend because he chose to live in the woods in the Cape and farm goats. [He’s] one of those guys where when I first met him on the beach, he was reading a Doystoyevsky novel and just sitting alone,” Enriques described his business partner. “But, he’s like a shorter farmer who keeps to himself and is [a] salt of the earth New England type guy.”
Unfortunately, Willie passed away last October. After his passing, Enriquez felt that it was more important than ever to work on setting up an event to bring the community together. The Cape Cod beach clean up was born.
“How do you represent the legacy of an individual through a company and do that in a way that’s honorable and truly represents how great Willie was?” Enriquez said. “[It’s] a question that I don’t think we’ll ever answer perfectly, but it’s part of what guides the goal of having a positive impact and the clarity of that is why we are here.”
Plans for a clean up in 2021 are underway, and Enriquez hopes that Willie’s Superbrew can continue to bring the community together once again for the cause. For next year’s clean up, Willie’s will expand the initiative, with a goal to clean 1,000 miles of beaches and waterways across the northeastern region.
“I don’t pretend, and we don’t pretend, that cleaning every beach on Cape Cod, or cleaning every beach across New England, is solving environmental issues,” Enriquez explained. “But, it is building a positive change where people feel empowered to make more change and that’s the hope of our company.”
Enriquez encouraged anyone interested in making a positive impact or taking part in the upcoming 2021 beach clean up by shooting him an email at nico@superbrew.com.
“Get involved in your local community. Get involved with us if you want, but just try to make positive change.” Enriquez emphasized. “And also, don’t be afraid to make a jump. Hard seltzer is a great industry to be in but there’s so many other places to bring positive change.”
