Cinco de Mayo is this Wednesday, May 5 – a day to celebrate Mexican food, mariachi music, and, of course, margaritas. For those looking for a lighter, lower calorie way to have your tequila and drink it too, here are 5 alternatives to the classic margarita, all coming in at 5% ABV, to enjoy on 5/5. Hornitos Tequila Seltzer
The classic tequila brand launched its new ready-to-drink (RTD) sparkling canned cocktail to select markets in April, with wider distribution to follow soon. Hornitos Hard Seltzer is available in classic lime or mango.
Each 12 oz. serving is 5% ABV and contains under 115 calories and is made with natural ingredients, including blue agave and real Plata tequila.
Designed for “high energy moments,” the tequila seltzer has a suggested retail price of $11.99 per four pack in select markets, but national distribution should be in place by summer.
Lone Star Agave Seltzer
Texas’ iconic Lone Star Brewing launched its own agave hard seltzer last month. The Austin-based brewery, which is actually owned by Pabst Brewing Company, released its Lone Star Agave Hard Seltzer in two flavors: Agave Lime and Agave Watermelon.
Each 12 oz. can contains 100 calories, 1 gram of sugar, and two carbs. Agave Lime is also available in a 19.2 oz. tallboy.
Tequila fans will find Lone Star Seltzer to be a healthier alternative to a classic margarita, which can easily clock in at 300 calories and 30 grams of sugar for the same size serving.
Bud Light Classic Lime Margarita
Bud Light Seltzer’s take on the classic margarita is part of its limited edition “Out of Office” pack, which was released on March 1 and is inspired by classic cocktail flavors. For a margarita flavored hard seltzer that contains a mere 100 calories, it’s surprisingly satisfying.
Hitting the right balance of sweet and sour, you’ll forget you’re not drinking a real margarita.
While all of the Out of Office flavors are solid and worth trying while you can, the margarita stands out as the most authentic tasting.
With cans decked out in hibiscus flowers, they’re as Instagrammable as they are delicious.
Founders Más Agave*
Launched for mass distribution earlier this year, Founders premium hard seltzer is available in three flavors: Lime, Grapefruit, and Strawberry.
The craft seltzer is made with organic blue agave, plus “cane sugar, real fruit juice, and a dash of sea salt.” Each can contains 110 calories, 7 carbs, and 4 grams of sugar.
Más Agave comes in single variety six packs as well as a variety 15 pack, so you can keep your Cinco de Mayo celebration going all until the 6th.
