Hard seltzer has experienced a great surge in popularity recently, with a market share increase of over 200% in 2019 alone. This industry is projected to have a worth of over $2.5 billion as soon as 2022. With this drink increasing in popularity so much in such a short amount of time, some have begun to question why it is always packaged in a can. Are there bottled hard seltzers?

Way back in April of 2016, Truly launched its signature low-calorie alcoholic beverage, packaged in the form of six-packs of glass bottles. Its initial flavor options were pomegranate, grapefruit & pomelo, and Colima lime.

At the time Truly launched this product, White Claw had already entered the market in the form of bright, colorful and hard to miss portable cans. Earlier in 2016, White Claw began its product push with nine different flavor options. Seizing this opportunity to expand their image, Truly quickly adapted and began a variety pack of slim cans sold in 12-packs. This move was done in August 2016, just four months after they began selling bottles!

This would not be the only instance where Truly would shift their brand image to match customer preferences – in 2019, they changed the name of their brand. Although “spiked seltzer” and “hard seltzer” were interchangeable terms 4 or 5 years ago, the public eye has gradually gravitated towards a preference of “hard seltzer”. This move is largely due to the popularity of White Claw.

With the recent shortage of aluminum, Truly might be thinking about resurrecting the glass bottle.
