A new canned cocktail out of Rochester, New York, is creating a buzz in the ready-to-drink market. Black Button Distilling launched CanBee Cocktails on a mission to create a quality cocktail experience while supporting the world’s population of pollinators.
CanBee currently crafts one canned cocktail offering and it is, quite literally, the bee’s knees. The brand’s Bee’s Knees cocktail is bartender-quality and made with all natural ingredients. Its take on the prohibition-era cocktail features farm-fresh honey, real lemon, small batch gin distilled by parent company Black Button, and carbonation.
“As distillers and creators of CanBee Cocktails, we have a passion for providing quality spirits,” stated Carrie Riby, CanBee Cocktails’ Director of Marketing. “Undoubtedly, we knew we could create a canned cocktail that is exceptionally tasty, but we also wanted our efforts to support the ecosystem that provides the basis for everything we make – so a Bee’s Knees just clicked, and the rest is history. We couldn’t be prouder to share our first CanBee Cocktail. We know that consumers are going to love it as much as we do.”
Each 12 ounce canned cocktail contains an ABV of 8%. The cocktails, which earned a silver medal at the 2021 Denver International Spirits Competition, are sold in packs of 4 at retail locations. They are also available on the company’s website in 4 and 24-can packs.
CanBee Cocktails knows first hand how important bees are to the planet. The brand was founded by beekeepers. Black Button Distilling’s founder, Jason Barrett, relied on the expertise of his sister, who studies native bee behaviors, when creating the honey-forward RTD cocktails. A portion of the proceeds from every can sold goes towards supporting the Xerces Society, a non-profit which maintains the world’s largest pollinator conservation program. CanBee’s Bee’s Knees canned cocktail is currently available in 14 states, including, as of this week, Massachusetts.
According to CanBee’s website, “Bees are some of the most important species on our planet. You can thank them for every third bite of food you eat and for protecting our ecosystems. With at least twenty thousand species of bee worldwide, there’s a lot of bees that need our help – that’s why we donate a portion of our sales from every can we sell to pollinator conservation around the world and in our local communities.”
CanBee’s parent company, Black Button Distilling, was founded in 2012 and it is the “first grain-to-glass farm distillery in Rochester, NY since prohibition.” In addition to CanBee’s canned cocktails, the company also produces a wide variety of small batch whiskies, gins, vodkas, moonshines and liqueurs.
CanBee isn’t the only canned cocktail brand that makes bee conservation its top priority. Another New York company, Siponey, launched last year with a vision to create a repertoire of honey-based cocktails to raise awareness around the importance of honeybee conservation.
Siponey’s repertoire of drinks includes Siponey Royale, a rye whiskey-based cocktail with honey, lemon and sparkling water. Each 12 ounce can contains an ABV of 7.25%. The NYC brand also produces Siponey Café featuring rye whiskey, honey, lemon, cold brew coffee and sparkling water. Like Royale, Café is also packaged in 12 ounce cans, however, it contains a slightly lower ABV of 5%. Both of Siponey’s cocktail combinations were recently awarded gold medals at the 2021 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. All of the proceeds from the brand’s t-shirt sales go towards supporting private apiaries.
CanBee’s premium Bee’s Knees canned cocktails are a sweet homage to our pollinators and the hard work they do for the ecosystem. We can visualize eager consumers swarming alcohol retail locations for these new cocktails.
