You’ve heard of Texas barbeque and Texas vodka, but what about Texas seltzer? Thanks to Spoetzl brewery – makers of iconic Texas beer Shiner – it will soon be a reality.
Available starting in late August, Shiner’s Straight Shooter will initially be released in four flavors: Grapefruit & Lime, Lemonade, Mango, and Wild Cherry. Billed as a “craft brewed” hard seltzer, each flavor of Straight Shooter contains 90 calories per can, zero carbs, and is gluten-free.
Brewmaster Jimmy Mauric is enthusiastic about their brewing process. “When we set out to make our first hard seltzer we knew it had to be genuinely craft brewed,” he said. “With that in mind, we use just a few simple ingredients and water sourced from our artesian well. We brewed it so it would live up to its name ‘Straight Shooter’— it is a straightforward, transparent, delicious, and refreshing craft brewed hard seltzer.”
Spoetzl brewery and Shiner are the latest beer company to jump on the hard seltzer bandwagon, but the move makes good fiscal sense. The hard seltzer market grew more than 200 percent in 2019 alone, with trends expected to continue rising. Mark Anthony Brand’s White Claw and Boston Brewing’s Truly currently lead the market, but with such explosive growth there is plenty of room for new brands to join the party.
White Claw’s rise in popularity was so steep that there was famously a White Claw shortage during the summer of 2019, where bars and restaurants struggled to meet customer demand for the seltzer. Traditional soft drink companies like Coca-Cola and Sparkling Ice have also branched out to include hard seltzer in their portfolios.
Shiner’s Straight Shooter will be available in Texas just in time for Labor Day.
